LIFE Motto: Wisdom Worth Sharing

Matthew is rarely seen without a scroll tucked under his wing. Whether he’s reading, writing, or organizing ideas, he enjoys learning and sharing what he discovers with others. His love of learning reminds everyone that wisdom often grows one lesson at a time. But scrolls aren’t the only things tucked beneath his wing—he enjoys giving presents, and his friends never know when a surprise gift might appear there.

BIBLICAL BACKGROUND

Matthew was one of the twelve disciples chosen by Jesus (Matthew 10:3; Mark 3:18; Luke 6:15). In the Gospels of Mark and Luke, he is also called Levi (Mark 2:14–15; Luke 5:27, 29), and Mark additionally identifies him as the son of Alphaeus (Mark 2:14). The Hebrew name Levi is traditionally associated with being joined or attached, while the Hebrew name behind Matthew means “gift of Yahweh” or “gift of God.” Though Scripture does not explain why he is known by both names, both have been remembered as part of his identity. Matthew is also traditionally credited with writing the Gospel of Matthew, which emphasizes Jesus as the promised Messiah and frequently highlights the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies.

Scripture Spotlight

“Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.”
— Matthew 9:13 NRSV

Matthew appears several times in the Gospels, with his calling standing as one of the most memorable examples of discipleship. While working as a tax collector, Matthew responds immediately when Jesus says, “Follow me,” leaving his tax booth behind to become a disciple (Matthew 9:9; pars. Mark 2:14; Luke 5:27). Soon afterward, Matthew hosts a meal in his home where many tax collectors and sinners gather with Jesus. When the Pharisees question this, Jesus explains that He came to call sinners and declares, “I desire mercy, not sacrifice” (Matthew 9:10–13; pars. Mark 2:15–17; Luke 5:29–32). Following Jesus’ resurrection and ascension, Matthew is listed among the disciples gathered in the upper room as they wait together in prayer before the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost (Acts 1:13). Despite his prominent role among the disciples, Matthew is never recorded speaking in the New Testament.
